Well done Lynne!
Today while Lynne was Life Drawing, John Brady created two still life set up's using brown paper bags , positioned upright in a loose grid on the floor of the studio. The students were coralled around the set ups. In the morning the medium was pencil and John got the learners to set out 6 squares on the A2 page within which drawings of differing line quality and emhasis were explored. They then went on to explore tone as a centre of focus within the composition whilst working on a larger scale.
These type of activities were repeated in the afternoon using ink and wash. That session in particular was very dynamic and productive. Again they initally used line but then John set them the task of rendering their images in proportional tonal ratios of 1.-90% black/5%gray/5%white, 2.- 50% black/ 25% gray/25% white and finally 3. 5% black/ 5% gray/ 90% white (please correct !) . The challenge of rendering an object such as a mid/light tone brown paper bag in terms of 90% black was taken on board to varying different degrees, with a surprising amount of students engaging courageously in their efforts.
This was followed by an A2 drawing with a window outline within which the learners could explore an aspect of the composition which described the subject in a tangentile manner. Some depicted only shadows, others structural aspects such as the retetitious rhythm of the bag handles, others again looking at textures, negative space, linear planes or folds.
A short seminar followed in which the day's work was appraised.
In my opinion this was a very successful day as the level of focus and observation has improved and every student produced something of value which demonstrates their comprehension and ability to apply themselves.
When this level of learning manifests itself in the project work, it will be very fruitful.
