Hi Guys
Just wondering if we should have first year meeting . I think alot of the structure needs to be teased out . We have very few numbers attending and something needs to change . I feel we need to co-ordinate as staff better .. John cant do admin and co-ordinate also ..We all as first year staff need to get together and discuss .
Lynne
I will be continuing on with the mixed media workshop on Friday , Also I would like to do tutorials next week instead of life drawing as i feel i need to touch base with alot of my students in my group so i would like to get them together for a crit at this point . I will be gone to tyrone gutherie from the 9th to 16th so ill miss the exhibit . Also I would like to get the animations done the week before i go so no confusion
thanks

Tutorials
Hi all,
I have emailed a list of students to your gmit email account who don't seem to have had tutorials. I'm sure most of them have been seen, just not marked on the wall, thought we should be aware of who might be slipping through, there are 47 names, which can't be right.

Sketchup introduction workshop report
After a brief introduction on tuesday morning, I facilitated a projected introduction to Sketchup in the afternoon. We had a few problems with downloading but soon we got underway. Rather than following the official tutorials, we did our own exercise. The reaction was very positive and I think that many of those who participated will go on to use this very useful digital modeling tool.

Sketchup introduction workshop
Hi all,
I am planning on doing a basic introduction to Googles free online CAD software on Wednesday Nov. 16 if I can get enough student interest. They will need to have their laptops with them and I can demonstrate using the projector. Last wednesday I did a repeat tech drawing workshop.

Tutorials
Hi All,
I have put a list of the student groups on the wall beside shelving unit, thought it might be helpful if we could tick who we have seen so that we can see an overall picture and if anyone is slipping through the net. Space for date up top and we could inital box opposite student, so we know who has seen them. Tutorial sheets and spare copies of attendance sheets under notice board inside door.

Clay texture and basic plaster workshop
Hi all,
I did a basic workshop today in clay texture, where they took clay and went around the building collecting textures. We used these then to make plaster casts. So an introduction to both methods which can be advanced once they have moved on to that stage in their projects. Some can see how working this way may be of relevance to their project and I think food for thought for the rest of them. Some plan take clay to capture information up town, I have a couple of bags under the shelving at the side of our new store. One of them is a clay plaster bag - clay that has been used to cast from or into. I had 18 in attendance.

Grid & Orthographic workshop reports
Hi,
sorry that I am so late in reporting on these two workshops.
The Grid session took place on Wed. Oct 12 and the learners were introduced to the very simple and basic use of a rigid grid as an aid to graphic(2D) reproduction. The objective was to acquire very basic skills which in the digital age may not be as common as they were when we our selves might have used carbon paper and tracing paper etc..
I distributed A4 b&w photographic images which the learners then had to impose a grid upon and use this as a guide to replicate through the medium of graphic pencil. The orientation of the image was displaced so that the reading of the image became purely visual. Line was used to frame shape and a self made grayscale was used to identify tone. The limitation of any given media were apparent.
We also discussed the historical use of the device, its use in observational drawing, how the rigid grid could be expanded (literally, as a tool for enlargement) and distorted (skewed). Fragmentation and collage were also identified as possible outcomes from the task.
The workshop was repeated in the afternoon with a second group.
The Orthographic Drawing workshop took place on Wed. Oct. 19.
The basic exercise showed how to visually record an existing object using a system of drawing that uses actual measurement. The purpose and context of technical drawing in general and its specific use in Fine Art & Design practise was discussed. The learners then went on to render an object of basic volumetric forms (cubic, cylindrical) on a scale of 1:1. The ability to record larger existing volumes and forms (e.g. architecture) by the use of proportional scale drawing was identified. This logically led to the ability to create a drawing of forms/objects/buildings that do not yet exist in real space (proposals) but which can be imagined/ understood/costed by others (commissioning clients, builders, manufacturers) through the use of an agreed, measured, coded system of drawing.
This basic workshop was well received by those who did not have previous technical drawing experience.
I intend to run these workshops again for those who were life-drawing or absent.

Plan of action
Hi guys ,
I had life drawing today and set up the light for tonal studies , tomorrow I would hope to look at texture .
Friday im going to do a repeat workshop in visual texture as the response was good to repeat , Also Claire has full list for her tonal workshop .
We need to look ahead with next L2L project for Monday and CVS seminar 1.30- 230

Build a city workshop
Hi all,
todays workshop went well, with interesting results. The workshop was broken into two groups, one working with synthetic materials (plastics, aeroboard etc) and the other working with natural ( cardboard, timber, stone, material etc) It was not a rigid separation, just merely a guideline. Between half ten and eleven students were asked to produce two pages of drawings in their sketchpads. At half eleven they switched material and at twelve were asked again to do two pages of drawings. After dinner they made a number of houses which were built off the floor and attached to the walls. They were asked to do two more drawings befor the end of the workshop and also discuss the process they went through. Photos and videos of the workshop have been taken. Might do it again in a couple of weeks time, if there is interest.
Regards
John B

Friday 14th Oct 2011
Hi all,
While Tony and Lynne are delivering the workshops in Texture and Frottage tomorrow, I will hold tutorials. Next Friday 21st October, to build on the tonal work, I will run a workshop based on Richard Serra's action words. Students form small abstract forms in clay in response to these words, they then each make greatly scaled-up tonal drawings of one of them. There then follows a sort of 'visual Chinese whispers' as they rotate and draw from someone else's drawing and again from that drawing. The idea at the end of the exercise is that they should be able to match the original clay piece used to the last drawing they each made. The tonal information should have survived enough through the drawings of the drawings of the drawings... to allow this to happen. To conclude there will be a short discussion on the relative successes or otherwise!
Either Lynne or Tony will repeat their workshop and the other will hold tutorials. We will rotate again the following week so that there will be two of the three workshops available for the next three weeks.
I think it would be important that the students sign up for a tutorial on one of the next three Fridays. What do you think colleagues?

Well done Lynne!
Today while Lynne was Life Drawing, John Brady created two still life set up's using brown paper bags , positioned upright in a loose grid on the floor of the studio. The students were coralled around the set ups. In the morning the medium was pencil and John got the learners to set out 6 squares on the A2 page within which drawings of differing line quality and emhasis were explored. They then went on to explore tone as a centre of focus within the composition whilst working on a larger scale.
These type of activities were repeated in the afternoon using ink and wash. That session in particular was very dynamic and productive. Again they initally used line but then John set them the task of rendering their images in proportional tonal ratios of 1.-90% black/5%gray/5%white, 2.- 50% black/ 25% gray/25% white and finally 3. 5% black/ 5% gray/ 90% white (please correct !) . The challenge of rendering an object such as a mid/light tone brown paper bag in terms of 90% black was taken on board to varying different degrees, with a surprising amount of students engaging courageously in their efforts.
This was followed by an A2 drawing with a window outline within which the learners could explore an aspect of the composition which described the subject in a tangentile manner. Some depicted only shadows, others structural aspects such as the retetitious rhythm of the bag handles, others again looking at textures, negative space, linear planes or folds.
A short seminar followed in which the day's work was appraised.
In my opinion this was a very successful day as the level of focus and observation has improved and every student produced something of value which demonstrates their comprehension and ability to apply themselves.
When this level of learning manifests itself in the project work, it will be very fruitful.

Hi buddies,
Last week did a 2 point perspective work shop. The layout was discussion of some of the basic language and ideas in Perspective. The use of eye-level and its relationship to the horizon line. How to identify and locate the six vanishing points within a cuboid or rectangular space ( where the body is perpendicular with a surface) between 11.30 and 12.30 the were sent out to find and draw a location where they could use two point perspective ( a positive or negative corner). In the afternoon we did some work with centre point construction, with two point perspective and isometric drawing. They were asked to invent a space, and locate an invented shape within it.
Today, we did a workshop exploring weight of line in pencil. Students were first asked to make six drawings 15cm by 15 cm of a number of brown paper bags. All six drawings were to explore the weight of line, pushing and lifting the pencil as a means of exploring the extreme of their line. Three of these drawing were to have one aspect be further developed with tone. Between 11.30 and 12.30 students did a full page drawing exploring weight of line with three tonally developed centers of interest.
After dinner we used ink again six drawings exploring line. Three of the were to be tonally developed, one using 90% black 5%gray and 5%white. One using 50%gray 25% white 25%black and finally 50% white 25%gray and 25%black. They had a lot of difficulty doing the blackest drawing as it was quite strange, but also quite liberating for them. We also insisted that the six drawing were completed before they were put up on the wall ( all drawing were to be signed and dated)
The final drawing was a full page, ink drawing with a one inch margin around the side. Students were asked to decide on an aspect of the paper bags that they found interesting and make a drawing that investigated and visually communicated that interest. They were encouraged not to illustrate the bags but rather isolate specific aspects, handles, shapes, lines, patterns etc
Next week
Work shop on city building. Twenty students will build a city out of found objects. Will record the process in drawings and photos. They will be asked to incorporate aspect of their research so far. Principles will be explored but essentially a four year olds sense of play will be the most important aspect of the workshop. They have been asked to bring in the materials they hope to use themselves.
Should be fun : )

Update
Hi All ,
Well what A day from hell ... I was taking my class this morn in pre-fab when approx 10.30 I left for paper . I was met by groups of annoyed and frustrated students as they were told no tutors for them as we are already down 2 and John is out sick . They were sent off to research and pretty much left to their own devices . This is bad considering 2 groups already been missing a tutor from the start. Also they presumed them no CVS Class for day also . This was completely UN - professional and embarrassing . This is no reflection on John as he is sick .. but no structure is put in from management to en-sure that 80 plus students left wondering whats going on . In the end i took them all to try and full some day together but i wont be doing that again .
Also model out as her father passed away so jimmy is covering tommorow .
On Friday we took the students on a field trip into the city as it was a fine day . We also did tutorials with students on our return . So we re- scheduled texture workshops for this friday again .
Today -I gave the students a hand out of the principles of art and design and talked them through simple ways of structuring their projects by following these rules. I also took a few tutorials for very confused students .
L2L I presented a power point on how to make a good presentation and then showed them a presentation i made for my masters to give an - example .
Also where is the key to computer .. i tried everything in the end i set up my own ..very frustrating
.John is out again tomorrow

Update on stuff
Hi All,
just a few quick items- 2 WORKSHOPS TAKING PLACE ON FRIDAY
TONY M - Frottage and Actual texture
Sign up sheets are up - if taking offsite will need to sort out insurance lists etc.. and notify admin
I will continue with tutorials to all present and not undertaking a workshop on friday
Students getting their lockers today so should be able to store work from now on.

Hi gUYS ,
Just discovered that we must tell all students to enrol in moodle course... They go too learn on line ...then galway and go to year 1 and find my name . Then enrol in the 3 moodles i have created for first year . I have done a few in digital media class so i will now continue to up load info . They need to enroll ASAP . Most are registered at this stage

TEXTURE TALK - perspective workshop
HI CAN NOT SEND FOLDER BY EMAIL SO GAVE LEARNERS THESE DEFINATIONS AND WE DISCUSSED IMAGES BELOW
TEXTURE
Actual texture This is the actual texture of how the work of art looks and feels to the touch. Works of art can have various actual textures which are created by the artist's choice of materials and how they are handled.
Simulated texture / Implied (Visual Texture) Creating the visual effect of texture without actually adding texture or the visual sensation of texture on a non-textured surface. Simulated textures are created by the manipulation of lights and shadows, line, TONE (TONAL GRADUATION) and other visual elements. Simulated texture can be achieved using a variety of media such as pencil, pen, paint, photography and computer generated imagery.
Trompe l’oeil Visual texture so realistic that it fools the eye into believing it is reality.
Invented/Symbolic textures The creative way of adding alternate materials to create an interesting texture. Invented texture often appearing in abstract works and are created with lines or shapes.
Abstract texture A form of visual texture that has no basis in everyday reality. I
Finally I talked about Additive texture – For example Collage, Papier collé, Photomontage, Dé collage, Decoupage - The students were asked to look up these words as homework!!!
Do not know if a list for John B's workshop on perspective was put up?
